There has been a lot of attention around the recent takeover of Cadbury, and being a native "brummy", I find the topic of most interest. My mother's home is owned by the Bournville Village Trust, and I have witnessed first hand the kindness the Cadbury family offer to those in need. And it sickens me to see an American company, one that employs people from all over the world, devour what is all good and British. Now, I am not a racist, I have no discrepancies with Americans, and welcome the mixture of culture, and I am an avid supporter of community, something that we see less of in today's cruel world, yet I do regret seeing a great British industry, such as Cadbury, escaping the caring hands of it's British owners.
George Cadbury set out on a mission in 1824 to provide the good people of Birmingham, and the United Kingdom with two things, delicious tasting produce, and the sense that not all those corporate fat cats were in it for the money. I get the 907 bus home from Bull Street, the very street were George Cadbury first set up a small business that would some come to dominate the confectionery world, and change the lives of thousands, including those of my mothers and my own. But I will not see Cadbury die without speaking my mind, and I truly believe that Rosenfeld is making a dier decision in taking Cadbury away from us. She may think she is making a wise decision, and it will only make Cadbury part of this powerful jaggermaut that is Kraft, but all it is doing is taking the Great out of Great Britian. Cadbury is one of the only industry Britain holds from her glory days of the Empire, and Cadbury is more than a chocolate making company, it is a symbol of Britishness. When I bite into a dairy milk, or a Cadbury's cream egg, I think of how special Britain truly is. I think of how well Cadbury treat their employees, and how Cadbury showcases my hometown of Birmingham. Now whenever I bite into any Cadbury product, I fill with resentment, and dissapointment, and sorrow.
